My roommate and I are dog sitting while the dogs owners have a baby. I am more of a morning person, so I am fine with getting up early and taking the dog for a nice long walk. As I was falling asleep last night, I thought, "Maybe I'll do the 3-mile loop in reverse tomorrow morning." Thank goodness that is what I did and that I tend to be observant.
I found not ONE,
but TWO
ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS on the sidewalk. In my path.
They are so real with their watermarks and plastic strips and fancy ink. No one was around. It was not in front of a house. There was no wallet. They were a few feet apart. Is there a maximum amount of money that if you find over that, you have to report it? Someone mentioned there might be when I came in to work all excited this morning.
Happy Halloween!

Wow! I don't know about the reporting aspect. Maybe I could check with the hubby and see if he knows.
Okay, I asked him what he thought and he said that he isn't aware of any legal obligation... but that he isn't a lawyer.
And he said that he thinks that calling the police would be the right thing to do.
Maybe they'll tell you to keep it!
I'm pretty sure it's yours, free and clear. From what you say, there was nobody around, you didn't find anything that might be attached to it (like a wallet), and you weren't near anybody's home. The point is, there was nothing on the cash, or near the cash, that might have indicated who the previous owner was. So now you're the rightful owner. You might want to check with actual members of the bar, but that's my advice.
And I bill at $200/hr.
if i remember right from my (new york) bar class, the "legal" thing to do is to report it as found property to the police department. then, if no one claims it after a certain amount of time, it's yours. might be worth checking the boston police website on found property...
Hmmm...I've googled the heck out of various police stations in the area and searched their websites. Nuthin'. I did share the love and bought my officemates lunch. My friend said to use it for myself but unfortunately, $200 can't solve all the financial concerns of a graduate student. :) I'll walk back through that area in the morning and see if anyone put up signs.
I also found a ring in the ladie's room at work today! I put up a sign and left it in the main office. If anyone is missing anything, let me know and I am sure I will find it!
