This may be a TMI on the pets post, so sorry.
Having wall-to-wall carpet is not really my thing. But, my new apartment is all carpet except the eat-in kitchen and bathroom. So I put a woven rug under my cat pan in the second bedroom because the kitchen and bathroom are not big enough for a cat pan. I have soaked the rug in baking soda water and hung it in the sun a few times since the beginning of the spring to keep it clean.
My cat goes in the pan, but frequently hits the edge, so pee goes down the edge of the pan. I bought a carpet powder and a new cat pan recently and cleaned the whole area before I went on vacation. I put a little dirty litter in with the clean so as not to change too much and started putting newspaper under the pan because it is easy to change. Now that it is so freakin' hot out, I actually clean the pan every day even though I have one cat and she only uses it for one #1 and one #2 each day.
What does she do? She pees ON TOP OF THE (plastic) CAT LITTER BUCKET. I cleaned the pan and it had a mere THREE clumps in it. Seriously? I wish someone cleaned my toilet once a day. Beeatch.
[She also puked over the weekend, so I've been giving her hairball treats. I have been making sure she's drinking enough because of the weather to avoid any urinary problems. She is acting normal otherwise. I scruffed her, rubbed her nose in it, cleaned it up, then sought her out to give her treats.]

I do feel bad for the poor kitties in this heat - ours alternate between lying in the tub and making out with the window fans!
Seriously - only one of each number a day? I think ours might be having a laugh. They eat too much and poop too much. Much to my despair I have one that pees over the edge too.
Dr. GF, glad to know that it isn't my kitty being lazy with her aim. She finally realized the kitchen floor is cool to lay on because she isn't a fan of the fans. Yeah - she doesn't use the pan too frequently. :-)
We had the same issues with pee over the edge. Girl cat who squats, but still issues for some reason.
We finally got a Booda-dome with the "clean step" ramp.

We switched partly because the whole house was carpeted too. And there was no way I was putting a litter box in a laundry room, bath, or kitchen. The other reason for the switch was that even though it was in a corner and was mostly out of the way, we just couldn't solve the problem with kicked out litter and badly aimed urine. This was coupled with the fact that she was getting older and needed the ramp, it worked out very well for us.
Our cat would never ever go into an enclosed litter box until we got this one; it is quite large. Which was good for her, but you need to make sure that you've got the space for it.
Note that we tried one of those automatic rake things when she was younger. But it was sort of a disaster, because she always peed a LOT, and the clump was too big for it to scoop. Coupled with the problem that she always went on one particular side, so that side of the storage container filled up really fast when it could rake it. It just didn't work for us.
Some cats love them.
I wish dogs would go in litter boxes when one is at work or out of town for a night.
Thus, no doggie yet.
Maybe someday.
P.S. When sold the house that was carpeted and pre-booda-dome, we had the carpet professionally cleaned before putting it up for sale. He told us that there is pretty much no product that will entirely get urine out of carpet. So, be aware of that.
Danielle, my parents had an automatic one but one of the cats was afraid so they never had it plugged in! I worry about the carpet because under the extra rug I have down I can smell cat. Oops. There will just be some added cleaning when I move and some finger crossing that no one notices until I get my deposit back (that should be what the extra $20/month I pay is for, but who are we kidding?). I had a booda dome but it was pretty small, which is why I got a rectangular one. Maybe I'll get one of those bigger ones.
