Now that I'm older, I like coffee and beer (what I catch I will be someday, huh?). I subscribe to Beeradvocate magazine and they have some great recipes every month. It is also great to read at the gym, because (1) Some day a guy will think I am spectacularly cool for reading a beer magazine at the gym and (2) All of the pieces are short. December's issue has a recipe for Beeramisu. I think I've enjoyed all "breakfast beers" (i.e. coffee-flavored) that I've tried, so what better thing to do than combine in a wonderful dessert three things I love - coffee, beer, and chocolate. I also realized after making this that tiramisu is not so hard to make. I bet you could make any version - coffee and white chocolate? Bailey's tiramisu? Caramel tiramisu?
The options are endless.
The recipe is typed up in the comments because I couldn't find a link.
P.S. Lest anyone check in this weekend and think that I've failed Blog365 in less than a month, I'll be in VT at my parents. They recently got satellite internet, so we'll see how that goes. I may check in with a couple of pictures of the "Burn weekend", but my roommate is already afraid I'm obsessed with this whole blogging thing. For now, I'm going to date this entry for Saturday.
P.P.S. "Spectacular" is one of my new favorite words, hence the "spectacularly" in the post.
P.P.P.S. I think if/when I ever get a better camera and start taking cool pictures of things like Danielle, those pictures will be of food.

Beeramisu from Beeradvocate magazine
Mascarpone ingredients
Buy it. :) If you really want to make your own, let me know and I'll email those directions to you.
Beeramisu ingredients
1 C heavy whipping cream
1 C powdered sugar
16 oz store bought mascarpone cheese
10 oz Double Chocolate, Espresso or Imperial Stout
1/2 C Espresso or strong-brewed coffee
60 Ladyfinger cookies
1/2 C cocoa powder
1/4 C 120L Crystal Malt
1/4 C Dart chocolate grated finely for garnish
Whip cream and powdered sugar until you have soft peaks. Carefully fold in mascarpone cheese so as not to deflate the whipping cream.
Mix beer and espresso.
In either half-pint glasses, tasting glasses, or a trifle dish, layer ingredients. First dip each lady finger in the beer mixture for about 15 seconds. "Resist the temptation to leave the cookie in any longer or they will become soggy and fall apart." Layer these lady fingers on the bottom of your dish(es), cutting cookies if necessary to make a full single layer. Scoop the mascarpone mixture and cover the ladyfingers. Lightly dust with cocoa powder and a few grains of crystal malt. Repeat this process until all the glasses or the dish are filled. The top layer, finish with the mascarpone mixture, topp with shaved chocolate and a few grains of crystal malt. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to help set the dessert.
[NOTES: I used about 150% of the recommended volume of beer/coffee, about 35 lady fingers in a 13 x 9 inch pan, and an Imperial Stout. I also microwaved the mascarpone 30 seconds and whisked it before mixing it with the whipped cream so it would be soft. Seriously, no more than 10 to 15 seconds per lady finger in the beer mixture and do not let them drip or they will get extremely soggy. I did not go to a beer supply store for the crystal malt, but am sure it will taste fine - I'll let you know. There are more details in the original, but I figure those are only necessary if you're male and/or not used to cooking, no offense.]
Mmm...beerios...
This looks good! I might try it out
How unusual. I think it is cool that you subscribe to a beer magazine. So, if the guys at the gym don't think so, you know you've got the 'cool approval' of your fellow blogmates.
Hope you have a great time in VT!
Man that looks awesome! Yum!
One of my favorite words is "Mantacular". My friend M got me hooked on saying that.
Coffee flavoured beer? Did I read that right? I've never heard of such a thing. It sounds quite disgusting to me, but I'd give it a chance.
It does sound interesting. Kind of hard to imagine beer in a dessert, but what the heck?
:-)
I'm having a hard time getting my brain around the combination of beer, chocolate, and coffee. But I do love (LOVE) tiramisu, so I might have to try this recipe.
