Summer food

I tried to post this morning as I ate my breakfast, but to no avail. I was thinking how DELICIOUS my breakfast was and wanted to share. Does this look AMAZING or what?!That's right - handpicked strawberries from Saturday (my hamstrings are still killing me from bending over instead of crouching) and my grandma's biscuit recipe. The biscuits are by no stretch of the imagination healthy, but boy are they good!

(If you're interested: 2c flour, 2tsp baking powder, dash salt, dash sugar, 1/2 c vegetable shortening, cold milk to mix...bake 400 for ~20minutes.)

So then, as I was eating dinner and thinking about reposting it, I figured I needed to say more about this than, "Here's my breakfast. Aren't you jealous???" :-)

Then I had a mint Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich and OH BOY was it GOOOOOOD. Apparently one sandwich is only two points if you are doing Weight Watchers!

THEN I started thinking about all the great summer food. We had a garden growing up, and I would say a REAL summer dinner consisted of any combination of the following:

BL*T*
Tomato* sandwich (you like BLTs? You LOVE tomatoes? You should try just tomato and mayo sandwiches!)
Fried squash (sliced summer squash*, egged, floured, fried, yum.)
Corn*
Roasted green beans (green beans*, onion, garlic*, olive oil, roast, drizzle with balsamic vinegar)
Cucumbers* and sugar (just sprinkle a little on! This was usually something we were only allowed at our grandparents' house)
Strawberry shortcake (see above)
Grilled cheeseburgers (although "we", i.e. my Dad, grilled year round even though we live in New England)
Summer Squash* Enchiladas
Any mix of fresh veggies set out on the table to munch. Not in salad form, just in bowls.

That's all I can think of at the moment. If I come up with something else, I'll let you know!

*Homegrown, of course!

I remember McDonalds as a family meal and sometimes Taco Bell. When I was really young I remember my mom actually cooking meals, but that seemed to stop at some point.

Yum. I love fresh strawberries, but haven't had any in ages. Did you plant your own? My hamstrings are killing me too! We weeded this past weekend - owww.

It seems really late for strawberries. But hey, as long as you can get 'em, enjoy them!

The thing I miss about NE is the blueberries. We'd eat bowls of them plain for lunch on the weekend. Here, a tiny little (half pint?) container costs as much or more than the bigger containers we found in NE. No blueberries for us. :-(

My grandma had a garden, but we didn't. I liked eating the fruits and vegetables that she grew. They had apple, pear, and cherry trees. I never ate the cherries, but I loved picking them.

Fresh summer produce is a treat. I do love vegetables, so much so that I eat salad with no dressing. People think I'm crazy for this, but lettuce does taste good!

Mmm, summer food is the BEST. Since I can't make green things grow, I have to rely on the farmers' market. I definitely need to hit it this weekend.

I think you're trying to torture us all... you're surely bringing back memories of my mom's garden. More tomatoes and zucchini than we could ever eat... mmm. The farmer's market is great (though expensive!), but it's still not the same!

Ron, just don't eat the tomatoes at Taco Bell...or maybe that whole salmonella thing is over. I can't keep track.

Victoria, we had some come up in the backyard, but I actually went to a farm.

Danielle, last weekend was the first weekend of picking here. Blueberry picking is yummy too. Blueberries freeze really well! Nothing like fresh blueberry muffins in January.

Spark, I just eat the veggies and don't try to make it look like a salad. Yum!

Ern and Molly, thank goodness for farmers markets! I definitely miss my parents' garden.

Nothing beats fresh strawberries. I like them in crepes or just dipped in a tinnny bit of sugar. yum
