Being Googleable

I usually find myself very googleable. I just googled "jenski phd blog" and mine doesn't come up, but Danielle's does with a page she wrote two years ago. As a matter of fact, using "jenski" or "jenski97" only gives you random posts from my blog and comments from others. I will have to continue the quest to find myself on google with only my blog information. If any of you can do that, let me know what the word combination is! :)

I used to be able to find myself easily with limited information from online dating. It doesn't appear that this is still the case. I think a couple of schedules and programs that would come up have been taken down.

Perhaps I'm becoming more anonymous?

There's also another jenski97 and a jenski with blogs out there. NONE OF THE MYSPACE STUFF THAT COMES UP IS ME. I just want to make that clear.

Anyone have fun googling themselves or friends or family?

I just googled my real name, and it comes up that I have the same name as some girl who plays college hockey. Everything that came up was about her.

That's cool, I guess. As you know, I prefer to remain very anonymous!

I had a comment with some combinations of words that do and don't bring me up, and I decided to delete it.

Anyway, the point I was getting at was that I prefer that no one be able to find me that would hear me lecture/teach or apply for a job. The combination of words that brings me up is fairly obscure. I just have to hope that it is obscure enough.

I don't want anyone to be able to find my blog, but apparently it's not that hard! Damn it.

If you google my first and last name it comes up even though I changed the one entry that lists my last name and took my email off of my page that was my first name (dot) last name @ gmail.com GRR why are they still there???

/end crazy rant
LOL

Someone with my name works in finance/consulting in Texas and skydives...

And you already know I enjoy google-stalking people :)

Spark, good job staying in cognito!

Danielle, I totally agree that it's ideal if future employers or students can not find the blog. Sometimes I debate about starting a new one and not telling *anyone* and seeing what happens...

Maxie, I've heard that google refreshes their indexed pages every so often, but if they caught the one with your name, it might be there for a while. Maybe that's why I've become more anonymous - old pages have been de-indexed (or whatever it's called).

Carolyn, you don't skydive? Don't let the google-stalking distract you from the PhD-getting.

You can find my blog fairly easily by Googling Squirl. But I don't mind. I don't post my name and there's not much that I'm worried about people seeing.

I've looked up my birth name and found someone with a PhD. Hey, I don't have to do the hard work and can find myself out there with the degree anyway. That first name is a bit more formal, and it's usually connected to managers and directors in corporations, or from family trees of people coming over from Ireland.

When I look up my nickname (the one I go by IRL, not Squirl) I came across a woman who used it as the name when she sang at Renaissance fairs. I do like to sing, but she's not me. :-)

Good luck in staying as anonymous as you want.

Hmm, Google says I was listed in the 1891 census as a 38-year-old wife. Awesome!

Anonymity could work well for you. If not... perhaps you could try listing your blog on various search engines. That might help your site come up faster.

Squirl, that is so not fair that you have a PhD already.

Aurora, I thought I was old!
