Around the world in a few rooms

Aurora recently wrote about her armchair travels, which is funny, because I had just gone around my house taking pictures of the things that are from different places I have been. Care to join me while I visit a couple of continents?

North America. I get a new photo of my alma mater's campus every year if I donate. This is the most recent one.Australia: This is from my semester abroad and is called "Kangaroo Dreaming". In the top right and bottom left corners are water holes with kangaroo tracks; the middle is a campfire with men and a spear going from the top left to bottom right side; the black circles and connecting line in the bottom right represents running water.Asia: I spent a school year right outside of Beijing teaching English. I spent a LOT of time while I was in there looking for the perfect set of the four seasons. I am a big fan of earth tones and found this set in Suzhou. I think that they are in order from spring to winter.
I also found this at a small market in China and got a similar one for my brother. I love the two dragons and the ball in the middle that they are facing.
And the other scroll I knew I wanted to get. I got this scroll in Beijing. This is the symbol for love and it hangs above my bed.
Africa: My best friend went into the Peace Corps after college and I visited her in Senegal. I actually did not bring home anything for my wall when I went, but she has since given me these two things. I did bring home a pounder, which you can see in this picture that is made of sand.
This painting is called "Les Epouses", which I think technically means spouses? Or does it mean wives? Anyway, she got it because it looks like two women friends together, and it reminded her of us.
When I went to France in high school, I was not thinking about getting something I could one day hang on the wall. I do have a couple of small prints that are packed away from that trip. I think that some day I will print out larger prints of my favorite travel photos to hang on the walls too.

I still have two continents to go. My Dad asked me sometime within the past couple of years if I wanted to go to Antarctica with him. Um, YES! He knows it is something my Mom would not be up for (she has MS and would much rather go to the Caribbean and sit on the beach to relax), and that I want to get to all of the continents. I think hitting South America and Antarctica with my Dad could be fun. Besides, he took Spanish in high school and could take a refresher course to get by because he owes me from the couple of weeks I kept him fed during our travels in China. :)

Nice collection! You should make some art of your own to hang on the wall.

You know, I was looking at the spring-summer-fall-winter collection and wondering if you had winter placed after spring. To me, it kinda looks like spring-winter-summer-fall.

I'm impressed that you have such an international collection of art. That is a very cool way to remember your travels and experiences. I bet it makes you happy to see each piece.

Ron, thanks! I love those scrolls too!

Unsigned, I just have to narrow down my favorite pictures to one or two then they'll get put up there. I'm not really artistic beyond that. :)

Spark, if not with my Dad, my future husband better want to go!

Danielle, I usually figure out the seasons by process of elimination. I am pretty sure the bamboo on the far right is winter, the crysanthemum is fall, and the little buds are spring. That leaves the second one as summer...I think. Molly or KHC know??
And I do love that each of these things means something or has a memory.

danielle, jenski has it right.

Spring: Cherry Blossom
Summer: Orchid
Autumn: Chrysanthemum
Winter: Bamboo.

"As well as the obvious four seasons, there are hundreds of words that are implicitly associated with a season, and often an emotion too. Among the flowers, cherry or plum blossoms represent spring and are associated with modesty; the loyal orchid is a flower of summer; chrysanthemums are a sign of fall and symbolize purity; the sturdy but flexible bamboo shoot indicates strength for winter."

Jenski, if you don't get to Antarctica with your dad, I'm totally there for you! You'll just have to help me smuggle home a penguin.

Ah, I see. I thought they were all supposed to be the same plant. In which case, the second stark one looked like winter to me.

Thanks, Molly!

Carolyn, careful what you suggest! I'll bring a big bag with air holes.

Danielle, that would be a cool way of doing them too! A tree through the seasons...
