Many newer games are along the same lines, as far as what you do and how you get points. Maybe it is because I have played a lot of games with cards? There is usually some sort of card prompt, players respond, and there is voting or guessing about the "right" one or the funny one.
Balderdash is the oldest game I remember that works this way. You're given a real word and everyone guesses/makes up a definition. Then everyone guesses which definition is right. You get points if you guess the right one, someone guesses yours, or yours is close to the real one.
Saturday I played Wise and Unwise at a game night. This one has cards with the start of an old saying. Everyone finishes the saying, they are read, and people say which they think is the real one. One of them was essentially "There is an old Jamaican saying, 'Fetch a pail of sand...'" KHC and I finished it with "...to keep a fire burning." You know, the sand protects the fire or holds the heat or something. The real ending? "...to make a rope." I think someone was smoking something when that old saying was written!
There's an old Maltese saying, "Malta would be a delightful place if..."
KHC and I wrote, "...the women never grew old." We got a vote for that one!
The real ending? "Malta would be a delightful place if...the priest all turned into trees."
Okay.
Other great games along these lines? Apples to Apples and The Game of Things (I haven't actually played it yet, but it looks fun!). I am also a fan of Taboo, Scattergories, another one that I played with Molly and her family, Outburst, and I am sure others I have played along the way.
I'm not actually a huge fan of games like Monopoly or Life. I get bored (no pun intended) before the game is even close to being over. Games like Chutes and Ladders and Candyland are good though. :)
Any favorite games out there?

I like yours and KHC's responses better. :o) Games = fun times.
I like songburst. You finish the lyrics of a song. Kinda like the TV show, I suppose, except I've never seen the TV show...
I find Monopoly boring too. The best games I've played have all been in comedy improv classes. :-)
I am the QUEEN of taboo. I freakin LOVE LOVE LOVE that game. and pictionary.
I loved balderdash, because I would make the word's definition always be dirty and demented somehow. I did'nt win a lot but had fun. I will have to look for wise and unwise, it sounds like fun.
